President Obama and the National Debt

The national debt has been a growing problem for years.  Many think that it is risky and could harm everything from our economy to our national security.  This week, President Obama requested another increase in the limit on our debt.  Here are a few points on the issue:

  • The most recent request is for $1.2 trillion, which will bring the limit over $16 trillion.

  • This request is necessary to keep the government running properly due to money being over-appropriated.

  • In 2008, Candidate Obama said this:
  •  Under his administration, $5.8 trillion has been added to the national debt.  That is more than the "unpatriotic" amount added in the 8 years that George W. Bush was president.

  • Neither request is unpatriotic. President Obama's request is simply hypocritical.

  • It is the Congress, not the President, that spends money.  The president can affect the spending level through leadership and proposing a budget that will lead to less spending.

  • The most recent budget President Obama proposed was in February of 2011, and was defeated by the Senate 97 - 0.

The debt ceiling increase, while requested by the president, is more the fault of the Congress.  Obama was wrong to call President Bush unpatriotic.  He also has failed to take actions and propose policy, during his first 3 years in office, that would lead legislators to slow or stop the growth of our debt.
